There’s More to A Detox Than Just Food

You’ve made a wonderful decision for your body to start eating real food. That’s step one.

But, even if you know exactly WHAT to eat, there is still the WHEN, WHERE, WHY & HOW to take care of.

In order to create a full mind/body detox, keep the following guidelines in mind:

1. Eat in a quiet environment without distractions.
AKA not in your car, not while on Facebook or Instagram, and definitely not while you’re on the phone. When we distract ourselves during a meal, we miss the whole experience! We don’t savor the tastes, textures, and weight of each bite because our brains are too busy processing something else. Before you know it, the food is gone and you are going for more.
2. Use your senses.
Food is fabulous. Notice it. Smell it. Taste it. Appreciate it. We often take for granted how lucky we are to have access to clean, healthy, delicious food. When we feel grateful, serotonin levels increase, and we are less likely to self-sabotage by overeating.
3. Chew. A LOT.
By eating mindfully and chewing thoroughly, you will make it so much easier for your digestive system to break down your meal (This is a fact). In the end, you will end up eating less because it takes time for your brain to get the message that, HEY – YOU’RE FULL! Challenge yourself to chew each bite 50 times. After trying this just one time, you will realize how often you are scarfing down food without realizing that you’ve barely broken it down in your mouth first.
4. Eat with enjoyment and pleasure.
Our bodies are literally and historically wired for vigilance, danger and negativity. Seriously! As humans, we instinctively dismiss positivity. It takes effort to incline ourselves towards joy. Make a decision to LOVE your food. When we eat with enjoyment and pleasure for long enough, we escape the shame and guilt that may have surrounded our eating habits in the past.

Eating is not just about the food. Eating can be an emotional and spiritual experience. It is one of the few things we do, without fail, multiple times per day, EVERY day. Harness that repetitive energy into a mindful experience, and become more of the YOU that you deserve to be.
